Understanding Latex Gloves

Latex gloves made up the earliest forms of disposable gloves in the medical industry
and still remain the most sought after. Today, latex gloves are routinely used in medical
facilities, laboratories, food service facilities, factories, and cleanrooms.
Unless allergies are involved, latex—or rubber—gloves provide excellent contaminant
barrier, especially for blood-borne pathogens. They work well to stop the spread of
germs.
Designed to be ambidextrous, latex gloves are easy to don and doff. Many latex gloves
are powdered to aid in this process and to help prevent the wearer from sweating in the
gloves.
To help you learn more about this popular product, the pros at Total Source
Manufacturing have broken down the steps of production and distribution.
Rubber Trees
The rubber sourced for latex gloves usually comes from South America with Brazil
being the greatest source of latex sap tapped from rubber trees. The sap is combined
with sulfur and zinc and then heated to become reliably pliable.
Producing Gloves
In the factory, ceramic hand molds are cleaned between batches of gloves and are
made ready to be dipped into the latex compound that has matured for a day or longer.
Once the hands are dipped in latex, they are sent through a high heat oven to set. A
special brush rolls the cuff so it is easier to remove from the mold as well as to use by
the end user.
A quality check system is in place to stretch the new batch of gloves and check them for
holes using air. They are also checked with water to make sure there are no leaks.
Packaged
Finally, latex gloves are packaged in quantities of 100 for shipment. Latex exam gloves
are available in 5 sizes, and cleanroom latex gloves are available in two different
lengths. Factories follow standards to ensure the gloves arrive safe and clean.
