Cleanroom Safety the Right Way

Cleanroom Safety the Right Way

Cleanrooms have a strict protocol for safety measures, and distributors who supply cleanrooms need to understand the ins and outs of cleanroom safety. For example, you may know that each employee is trained in chemical spill, fire hazards, and hazardous gas responses. But along with specialized equipment, venting hoods, and hazardous gas monitors, it is important for cleanroom supervisors to provide the right protective head, foot, hand, and body coverings. At Total Source Manufacturing, we specialize in the disposable garments that help workers remain safe in a cleanroom environment.

Protective Apparel

According to OSHA, employees must wear protective apparel to reduce particulate contamination.1 Coveralls, hoods, and shoe covers all need to offer liquid splash barriers and low particulates.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

OSHA also has strict guidelines for PPE including the use of face masks and shields, safety goggles and glasses, gloves, and respirators to protect against chemical splashes or any kind of uncontrolled reaction.

Gloves should provide the right kind of protection for whatever chemicals, alkalies, or bases are in the cleanroom environment. Vinyl gloves provide protection against inorganic acids, alkalies, and corrosive inorganic chemicals. Latex gloves provide protection against alkalies, acids, alcohols, and ketones. Nitrile gloves resist a wide range of chemicals such as acetic acid, ethylene glycol, MEK, and sodium hydroxide.

Chemical Resistant Fabric

Polyethylene-coated polypropylene protects against water-based liquids. This fabric is found in the Advantage Plus line.

Spunbonded-meltblown-spunbonded (SMS) fabrics offer liquid, fire, bacteria, virus, filtering, and chemical resistance. This fabric makes up the Advantage Pro line.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Finally, static-sensitive environments need ESD equipment to ensure there are no stray charges released in the laboratory. Specially crafted dissipative material and conductors ground employees and resolve potential charges.
